Sometimes I tend to forget how beautiful and perfect simple crochet can be. I found this yarn in a sale bin years ago and at the time I had no idea what I would use it for. The bright colours caught my eye and the softness of it made me think it would be perfect for newborns.
It was a super bulky and so it would crochet up quickly – which in my humble opinion is ALWAYS a good thing.
When I designed this baby crochet hat and diaper cover it was for a local photographer (thank you for the pictures Kim!). It also turned out to be one of my best sellers. It was a crochet baby set I really enjoyed making because I could make them so quickly!

ARE YOU A BEGINNER CROCHETER?
If you are new to crochet this really is THE PERFECT pattern for you. Keep in mind though… this yarn is both textured and multicoloured which means seeing stitches can be a little difficult.
I always recommend to stay away from these types of yarns as a beginner. This set would look beautiful in a soft colour like pink, blue or cream. And those colours are great for beginners. What makes this pattern even easier for a beginner is the oversized hook.
As new crocheters we tend to pull our stitches too tight and that makes them even harder to work. The oversized hook naturally helps to keep our stitches looser.
So even as a beginner this is perfect for a last minute shower gift or even those precious newborn photos keeping the baby cozy and covering your babies little bum in cuteness, hiding their plain diaper.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CROCHET A BABY HAT?
Well that really depends on what size yarn and hook and how intricate the design.
For this pattern however, using a large hook you may even be able to make both the diaper cover and hat in less than 30 minutes!
WHAT SIZE SHOULD A BABY HAT BE?
This crochet baby hat measures 14" x 5".
You will find varying sizes for baby hats as the sizing does have a range. If the baby is on the bigger side you may want to try to measure just to be sure it will fit.
If the hat is going to be a wee bit small go up a hook size – baby will always grow and they grow fast!
HOW TO CROCHET A SIMPLE BABY HAT
Let me assure you – it DOES NOT get simpler than this! This hat is crocheted top down in rounds. You do not have to join – you do not have to turn. BUT you MUST use a stitch marker to mark the end of each round so you can easily keep count.
There are only three increase rounds and 8 rounds in total! What??? Yup I am really thinking I should do a video for this one – I mean this is going to be so easy and will give so many new to crochet success. Ok enough blablablabla…(if you just read this – I wanna know lol – leave a comment)
Now let's get to it!
